Jennifer Alvarez is a health equity advocate with an extended experience in community organizing and program development. Jennifer has an emphasis in urban health disparities in her role as the Operations Director of The Tree South LA, a nonprofit dedicated to creating sustainable health equity through individual well-being and community support with the practices of yoga and meditation in South Central Los Angeles. Her yoga journey has been an ongoing transformation of individual healing from sexual trauma to that of holding and sharing space for collective community healing. Throughout her teaching experience, she has dedicated her energy to share the healing modality of yoga with youth of color impacted by the student-to-prison pipeline and formerly incarcerated people, Spanish speaking communities, and beginners to the practice. A quote that has guided her understanding of bridging “the yoga community” to “social justice organizing” has been the words of Lilla Watson. “If you have come here to help me, you are wasting your time. But if you have come because your liberation is bound up with mine, then let us work together.” Jennifer Alvarez, CYT 200hr, Trauma Informed, Maestra de Yoga en EspañolOperations Director, The Tree South LAMPH, Urban Health DisparitiesBA, Public Health Policy@thetreesouthla@yogaconjenni
